FAQ’s
Do you have to be a member of Westmount Park United Church to be married here?
No, you don’t have to be a member of the church, nor do you have to worship here. You don’t have to be baptized or be a Christian.
Do you have to be Christian?
No. People of various faiths or no faith are married in this sanctuary.
Do you welcome same sex marriages?
Absolutely! We believe that a committed, caring relationship between two people is a sacred gift and would love to take part in your perfect day.
Can you be divorced?
In the United Church of Canada, there is no rule to prevent divorced people from being re-married. A copy of the divorce decree must be shown to the presiding religious leader before the ceremony can be performed and details are required for pre-marriage registration of the wedding with the province.
Who officiates (presides) at the wedding?
You are welcome to bring in your own minister, religious leader or officiant who is legally permitted to conduct marriages. The officiant has to be licensed by the province to perform marriages. It is possible to register with the provincial authorities to take one wedding ceremony.
How much does it cost?
Westmount Park United Church charges a flat fee for $900 for weddings. This includes any additional times for rehearsal or visits with your wedding planner, our support staff as well as use of the Sanctuary, an additional room for the bridal party, sound system, baby grand piano, organ, refrigerator, parking lot, front and back parking and use of the garden. Music can be provided by the organist of your choice or we can recommend someone. The organist you choose must be able to play our Casavant organ and will need to speak with our organist first. Currently our organist charges $175 and this includes a consultation about your musical choices.
There is a community hall that can serve as a reception area at additional cost.
How much notice do we need to give?
We recommend five months notice. Registration of the marriage can face complications and the list of details to make this a special day is long. Summer weekends fill up quickly, both for the space and the reception. Please do not print invitations until the date and time has been confirmed with a signed contract and a deposit.
Can you get married any day of the week?
If the sanctuary is available, you can make your vows at any time, except Sundays. We will do our best to accommodate your date and time.
Can the sanctuary be decorated?
Decorations are welcomed, and the church has candelabra and occasional tables that can be used if you wish. You must make arrangements directly with your own florist. When you make your reservation, please be sure to tell us about what you will need, and we will leave time in your rental period for you to install and remove your decorative materials. We don’t allow confetti inside or outside the church. We also don’t allow any major alterations such as holes in walls or in the pews. We have a flexible sanctuary with a choice between chairs and/or pews, the traditional plan with an aisle or a plan of your own choosing.
If you have any other questions we welcome them.
